Sapporo International Short Film Festival Introduces “The Drunken Night Program” - A Film Event Blending Cinema and Sake （札幌国際短編映画祭の大人気プログラム！）
Sapporo, Japan -The Sapporo International Short Film Festival (SAPPORO Short Fest) proudly presents its delightfully unconventional “Drunken Night Program.”
This special screening, held separately from the festival’s main edition, invites audiences to enjoy short films in a relaxed, social setting - with laughter, conversation, and alcohol encouraged and celebrated.
第20回札幌国際短編映画祭では、毎年大好評の名物企画『酔っ払いプログラム～お酔いで最高～』を今年も開催いたします。
“酔っていないと入場できない”――そんな不自由で自由な夜に、酔っているほど楽しめる短編映画をお届けします。上映作品は、今年のノミネート作品の中から、専属の“酔っ払いプログラマー”が特別にセレクト。さらに、酔っ払いプログラムでしか観られない特別上映作品も！
お酒を片手に、笑いと熱気に包まれた映画のひとときをお楽しみください。

Origins: From a Local Experiment to a Festival Favorite 始まりは映画好きの集まりから
The Drunken Night Program began in 2016 as a small independent event called the Drunken Film Festival Sapporo a local event space.The idea was simple but radical: to borrow films from the main festival and present them in a casual, alcohol-friendly environment.
酔っ払いプログラムは2016年に行われた根っこという場所で行われた、酔っ払いに向けた上映会でした。
In 2018 Sapporo International Short Film Festival, becoming one of its most distinctive and talked-about programs.
2018年から札幌国際短編映画祭の公式上映プログラムとなり、映画祭の中でも特に異色のプログラムとなりました。
The Concept: Redefining How Films Are Enjoyed コンセプトはどうやって映画を楽しむのか

The program was inspired by an observation during regular festival screenings - even comedies often drew restrained laughter from Japanese audiences out of politeness.
笑いたいけれど周りの目を気にして笑いを堪えて見ているお客さんが多数いることが気づき。
A programmer Mr. Hideshi Tsunematsu to ask:
“What if we created a screening where people could drink, laugh freely, and relax together?”
「普段大人しいけれどお酒を飲むと陽気になる。」「居酒屋では3,000円を飲んで楽しむ人も映画だと2,000円は高いと感じる人もいる」お酒を飲みながら声を出して楽しめる上映会が出来ないか。
The event also plays on a cultural paradox: some hesitate to spend ￥2,000 on a movie ticket but are happy to spend ￥3,000 on drinks at an izakaya.
By combining the social comfort of drinking with the joy of cinema, the program redefines what a film screening can be.
To set a shared mood, attendees cannot enter unless they are already drunk or have a drink upon entry. An alcohol check at the door ensures this requirement is met (designated drivers are exempt). This playful rule creates a rare sense of unity, allowing strangers to laugh together without restraint.

If you are not drunk, alcohol will be served immediately.
Drunken Cinema Etiquette: 6 Playful Rules 6つのルール
To make the experience fun and safe, the Drunken Night Program asks attendees to follow six playful guidelines:（酔っ払いプログラムを楽しむ為の6つのルール）1. No entry without alcohol. (Exceptions available.)（酔っ払わないと入れません）
2. Feel free to chat during the screening.（上映中は飲んで下さい）
3. Minors cannot attend..（未成年者は入場不可）
4. If you are uncomfortable with violent or sexual content, please do not attend.（グロい映画や、エッチな作品が苦手な人はご遠慮下さい）
5. Eat and drink freely inside the venue.（会場内の飲食は遠慮しないでください）
6. All disruptive behavior is prohibited. (e.g., violence)（迷惑行為の禁止）

The gender balance is roughly equal, with slightly more women. About half of attendees are repeat visitors, reflecting the event’s growing cult following. 女性がわずかに多く、リピーターファンも多く訪れます。
A New Kind of Theater Culture 新しいシアターの楽しみ方
Unlike traditional cinemas, where silence is golden, the Drunken Program encourages attendees to order refills during screenings, eat and drink freely, and chat lightly with friends.The atmosphere resembles a cozy pub more than a conventional theater.
一般的な劇場とは違い、上映中にのんだり、おしゃべりが出来る新しい楽しみ方を提案しています。

“If you did this overseas, it would get completely out of hand!”
Their reactions highlight a fascinating cultural contrast: in Japan, where social etiquette is strong, a little alcohol provides just enough freedom to connect - without chaos.

The event sparks spontaneous friendships, as attendees often chat with neighbors during the screening and continue socializing afterward.
イベントを通じて、交流と会話が生まれています。映画を通じて酔っ払い、酔っ払うことで開放と交流が促進されています。
Screenings take place at Daruma Hall, a venue operated by local taxi company Hiragishi Hire, allowing guests to enjoy the event safely and return home conveniently.
上映会場は「ダルマホール」という地元のタクシー会社の会場で行われているため、酔っ払った帰りも安全です。
Looking Ahead イベントの今後
Now in its ninth year, the Drunken Program continues to evolve, fine-tuning the balance of film, fun, and social interaction. 9年目のイベントは益々、ソーシャルなイベントへProving that sometimes, a little sake can bring people closer to the true joy of film. 人々を繋ぎ、映画を本当に楽しむイベントに。
